5 Novice, Yet Essential Tips to Running Your Own Blog

When done successfully, blogging can be quite the rewarding experience. Sharing knowledge you are passionate about, not only spreads that same energy to those who consume it but also increases your own knowledge and vigor towards the topic. In my opinion, the real reward and satisfaction comes from helping others. Most people will agree that blogging is a great way to organize your ideas, thoughts, and events to share with the world. However, blogging can seem like a daunting task. Where do I start? Will it be good enough? What should I blog about? Is my topic relevant? These are all questions we begin to ask when faced with the decision to start a new blog. Below are a few tips that I picked up on when beginning my own blog, as I wish to encourage anyone seeking to start their own.

1. Find Your Niche

No matter what you are interested in, you can count on there being others who are into that same thing. Of course, the more comprehensive you keep your topic, the more you can incorporate into your blog. However, it is not extremely necessary as long as you don't completely corner yourself by centering your blog around a theme that is oddly specific. It is also possible to have too wide of a topic and becoming overwhelmed. You should never worry if your niche will be well received as long as you place faith in it.

2. Get Visual!

In this day and age, it is important to stimulate your audience with videos and pictures. There are dozens of sites that offer great visuals. Unsplash, my personal favorite, continuously updates their free library with the help of amazing photographers. Relevant videos and infographics are always a good idea, too. I can guarantee you will retain your audience for years to come by providing outstanding graphics that compliment your entries.

3. Engage Your Audience

One piece of advice I was given was to always engage your audience through comment sections, Twitter mentions, and everything in-between. Commenters on your blog should always feel like their input has some sort of weight. Their interaction on your website heightens their experience, thus adding another subscriber to your list and keeps them returning to your site for more. Making everyone feel welcome should be at the top of your priority list.

4. Master Your Look

How you envision your perfect blog should slowly, but surely, materialize. Regardless of how you construct your blog, it should reflect your topic and your vision. Fortunately, there are many sites that seamlessly allow you to drag-and-drog your ideas to perfection. Sites like Squarespace, Wix, and Wordpress allow you the freedom of managing your blog without getting into any technical knowledge. These sites do require a small investment, but I think they are worth each penny. Once you have constructed your ideal layout, blogging becomes more of a hobby than a chore.

5. Maintain the Passion

Passion fuels drive. Passion will be the reason you continue to maintain your blog when it seems like no one is interested or the number of visitors isn't quite where you want it to be. This drive will grow the topics you extend to your readers, the information you collect yourself, and the innovative techniques you employ to keep your blog afloat and fresh.

These short tips may seem trivial, but they have helped me settle on a blog I feel is perfect for what I plan to achieve. I've found blogging to be very refreshing and rewarding, from two visitors to thousands. I believe, while incorporating the tips below, anyone can start and manage a successful blog of their own.
